CCE Hosts Hunger Banquet

On November 16, 2010, the Office for Community & Civic Engagement hosted their 2nd annual Hunger Banquet. The Hunger Banquet was organized by Ashley Lowery and Michelle Winfrey, student service leaders in the Office for Community & Civic Engagement. The event raised awareness about hunger throughout the world. The event featured 25 UNCP student participants. As students arrived to the banquet they were asked to draw a paper out of a bowl that had one of the following classes on it: high income, middle income, low income. Based on their income level, the students were sat at various areas of the room. Those with high income were sat at the head table and were served water, sweet tea, and a full meal. Those with middle-income were sat at a table and were served water, un-sweet tea, a salad, and bread. Those with low-income were sat in the floor and were served water and bread. Throughout the event, different scenarios and statistics were read aloud to the group regarding hunger. The banquet’s goal was to show the stark differences of hunger based on income levels. The banquet was modeled after the OxFam hunger banquet.
